Sure, the inevitable doom of automation could be considered an “imaginary problem.” But UBI exists as a proposal beyond Yangs ideas, and that’s to truly combat poverty. Giving people no-strings attached money is much better than the shoddy welfare system we have in place today. And inequality, poverty and unemployment are all problems that have been exacerbated by the recent pandemic so now more than ever is it a viable solution. That’s not to say it is “the solution” to poverty, because I don’t know if there is one, and even if so, it wouldn’t neccesarilly be in the governments interest to pursue it. But it’s not true to say that UBI is an imaginary solution to an imaginary problem when it could pragmatically combat poverty right now in a way that our current system just can’t do
