exactly right, all the controversy is just "artists" mad because they don't feel special anymore now that a computer can do the things they thought were unique to them. Of they were really as against the ethics of AI as they claim to be then there should be no fan art, no character fusions, no tracing, no references, no style studies, since aaaaaaall of that is what they claim makes generated images so "unethical" and "soulless"
