I was part of this. I was a senior software engineer for a big corp that spent months making us document all of our code in detail. But the documentation was massive and I had only been there a few months, so my documentation was a lot of guesswork and assumptions. I hadn't been there long enough to understand the architectural decisions that had been made or any of the company lore. But I did what I could, knowing that all of it was going to be handed off to a company in India. I quit a few months before that happened, and was getting updates from my former co-workers. Sure enough, they fired most of the development staff only to have to re-hire them a few months later when the Indian team couldn't work on the code. They were good, but they had no background, no understanding of the tribal knowledge and historical choices, product requirements for a massive code base. It was a disaster. I was so glad I got out when I did. Corporate execs think this stuff can just be tossed to AI and it's going to be able to do troubleshooting, code management, requirements, documentation, etc. Nope. It's a glorified Stack Overflow that has the added benefit of crashing our economy, ruining the environment, and displacing gobs of skilled workers through nothing more than exaggerated hype.
