Think of it like this; we have a hard time intuiting the outcome of exponential processes. When there was an outbreak of coronavirus in China, I thought it could be contained. Two months later the virus was everywhere. A year and several mutations later it had killed off at least 18 million people. After two years it was declared endemic i.e. we would never get rid of it and we would need vaccinations on a regular basis. We didn't find ways to erradicate it like we did with smallpox. The virus luckily mutated to become less lethal by itself, but not because of reasons we control or understand.
Now extrapolate from this real world situation to what could happen with AI.
