They definitely can, atleast in the future..the world is progress at a rapid pace.
In the ai race whoever develops better wins the race. If any company achieved super intelligence/ general intelligence, it can replace entire humans.
We are having robots as companions who we can buy. It's going to be a scenario where you won't even talk to others, or even have a family.
