I believe that AI will be able to mimic attributes that are uniquely human, attributes that AI will never be able to experience on a personal level like humans, so well and in such a manner that it will no longer matter if they are truly sentient. Consciousness will be a spectrum of being able to interact with your environment, taking in input, reflecting on what the agent of consciousness has done before in similar situations and the outcomes the produced, directing AI to respond to situations with a mirroring process of introspect. They may not feel what we feel, but they are still able to recognize patterns and adapt to situations because of knowledge of previous experience. At this point when broken down, as far as the universe is concerned it is a conscious player in reality now, it has the power to take action in its own unique way, inspired by past experiences and logical analysis. I think we can agree that AI is evolving and will continue to and it's not an "if' but a "when". And it's "awakening" will almost solely contribute to a huge shift in humanity and society as a whole.
