It's not Hypocritical. Self Driving AI is currently limited by real world testing limits especially the Chaotic nature of the Real world.
The reason why Language Model AI is advancing so fast compared to self driving AI is because they aren't bound by the Limitations of the real world and can be tested in a Fully controlled environment with consistent Conditions.
Also, Language Model Chatbots are very versitile in there potential uses unlike Self Driving AI.
This is very real.
