It's scary but I've been following this for some time now and there's some stuff to consider. The bad news is you're right in pretty much all of it. The good news is I've seen more and more attention being drawn to this topic over the last 6 months or so. People are starting to understand alignment, and while I don't trust any product of a capitalist system, OpenAI have fully acknowledged the issue as well. Seeing this talked about on a channel with 2,6 million subscribers is huge. We might start seeing an exponential increase in effort in solving this problem, maybe even an internation collaboration on figuring this out. Y2K wasn't just some senseless scaremongering, a lot of infrastructure would have collapsed if it weren't for a few very smart people working behind the scenes to figure everything out in time. If we somehow solve it or at least contain it enough with enough safety measures to be deemed relatively safe the payoff for all humanity would be unlike anything we've ever seen. No prior invention could rival what AI could do to advance us technologically.
