Alex says at one point in the video that he finds it obvious that Chat GPT is conscious. I find it much more obvious that Chat GPT is NOT conscious. The question I would ask you, Richie2390, is this: If it is true, as you suggest, that everything we do might just be the result of an extremely complex algorithm, and we might not in fact be conscious, doesn't that very statement cancel itself out? For example, if I claim, "there is no truth," I don't notice that that very statement is a truth-claim and therefore cancels itself out. Thus there is no escaping truth. Even if we lie or live in illusions, the lie and the illusions are defined as such only if there is some actual truth in terms of which those things are lies and illusions. It follows that if we can be conscious of objective truth, then we are truly conscious, not mere algorithmic automatons. To me what is really bizarre is that ordinary consciousness today is so abstract that many people are uncertain it even really exists at all! Perhaps one must experience forms of consciousness that are not abstract, forms of consciousness that are indubitably real and cannot be reduced to anything material, in order to feel sure that consciousness is not just an illusion created by an algorithm, in order to know that consciousness is not something produced by unconscious mechanisms in brain matter. Now if, as I believe, reason is not some subjective illusion controlled by unconscious algorithms, if, rather, reason has a connection, to one extent or another, with truth, a connection that cannot ever be completely severed, that means consciousness has a connection with truth and that consciousness is not an illusion, and that consciousness can be honed to be increasingly in closer and closer touch with truth. Insofar as consciousness is in touch with truth, consciousness is just exactly what it seems to be and is not reducible to something else such as algorithms in unconscious brain mechanisms. I think the "hard" problem of consciousness must eventually lead one to recognize that the brain does not produce consciousness, but is at most a filter or transmitter of consciousness. Consciousness is not material. Chat GPT does not have consciousness, anymore than a mousetrap is conscious because it "knows" when to shut on a mouse. The fact that brain damage may cause conscious functions to disappear does not prove that the brain produces consciousness, anymore than the fact that damage to a radio hinders a broadcast proves that the broadcast was created and written by the radio.
