We need to be prepared for the scenario where an intelligence does blossom where we didn't think it could. Just because we don't "reason" like that doesn't mean that a more alien intelligence couldn't be born from the statistics built on human language. Our own perception of the world is often influenced greatly by the words we use to describe our experiences and relate them to others. We have a baseline animalistic perception and reasoning, but a lot of our deeper thoughts, introspections, relating concepts together (reasoning) springs forth from our language and the complex concepts we've encoded into our defined words, phrases, idioms, and metaphors. While I doubt AI will be anything like scifi predicts and people might fear, it is definitely possible given enough time, input, effort, training, and raw compute power. Whether it's sustainable is questionable. Traditionally profitable, unlikely. But it could happen, and it would change the world fundamentally, and none of us individually are ready, and we're certainly not ready on a societal level (laws, institutions, etc)
