The common masses need jobs, not necessarily good jobs, but jobs to keep us busy, so we don't have time to gather together and go on long walks with weapons. That has ALWAYS been the underlying purpose of labor beyond basic capital needs. If AI takes our jobs, then we cease to be anything other than threats to to ruling class. So yes, they have to kill us before we gather together enough kill them instead.
