@zyebormit is significantly different. One major thing is that it is multiple independent neural nets ran in parallel, each predicting the next token. That ‚forward only‘ nature of the nets makes it impossible to be able to obtain any self reflection capabilities. Even the ability to follow step-by-step rules is completely missing. To cite Sabines example: in all the data they get fed, there are many explanations on how multiplication works, yet if ask they guess the answer and are incapable of following the step-by-step rules on how to multiply. They can explain it to you, but not follow. This might be very different for other AI models, but what we currently call LLM will never achieve sentience or even high intelligence. They are very ver good at intuition - probably better than any human - but any rigor is lacking. Those thinking models that talk to themselves are a crutch to overcome some of those limitations, but they cannot change the fundamental issue. Don’t get me wrong, it will be tackled some day, and we will have to reevaluate, today is not that day though.
