Wow, I've never tried any of that, but I've frequently worked with million-line codebases (open-source operating systems), sometimes working on actually new (no reasonable examples findable in on the Internet) lock-free multi-threaded code whose correctness depended on specifics of the hardware's (or virtualization software's) specification. The only way to do any efficient work in such a scope is by developing your own abstractions (and matching things to established structures like graph-theory/automata) to use in your thoughts, in order to understand how to write code that is 100% correct on first or second try.
