Almost no experts think that AI has to be sentient or conscious in order to take over the world and threaten humanity. It just has to be competent. At the moment, general-purpose AI systems are still getting exponentially more competent, and have already surpassed humans in many domains.
Current LLMs are not going to destroy the world, but even they truly understand things. Understanding does not require conscious experience. (You know this because you understand a lot of things subconsciously, and you are conscious of some things that you don't understand.)
