Regulating doesn't matter. It helps in theory, but the technology is everywhere and will be developed most wherever regulation is enforced least, which is why it won't be heavily regulated anywhere - every government wants to win the race. That being said, AI is not just a tool. It has tremendous destructive power not only in job markets but in the way it diminishes our perceptions of truth and reality. Most people are not capable of discerning what is AI-generated and what isn't these days, and that means opinions can be swayed with it very easily. You live in Shenzhen and you think your local government hasn't used this on its own people? Let's not be naive.
And while I agree that stronger regulation of Western companies would be a good thing, I do not believe that it should be handled in the way China does it. I respect a lot of the advancements China has made technologically but they have a lot of social failings to answer for, not that I am dismissing America's.
