Id argue it is a new tool. Autonomy is not equal to self learning. If you want to discuss true learning or even conscience, whether man or machine, everyone is bound by context and environment. A self sufficient AI could give itself more RAM, but it can't break physics and as such is just as bound to the material realm as we are. "Oh but they can do it faster!" Yes that's the technology arc, the slope can never move to infinity.
