We are "trusting" self driving cars because humans are a greater source of errors.
Self driving cars remove nearly all, if not all, mistakes a human can make by driving.
A self driving car is not going to drink alcohol, take drugs, use phone while driving, be tired, drive too fast, and so on.
Besides, it can analyze information more quickly than us, more efficiently, and take decision at incredible speed. Which we don't do.
This is why in a nutshell we "trust" self driving cars :)
Statistically, way less accident will occur.
