AI could possess consciousness, but not at the level we might attribute to them. The only reason that we cannot rule out whether or not they are conscious at all is because we dont understand consciousness well enough. But if consciousness is some form of continuous stream of information processing, then the LLMs are only conscious while the neural networks are making predictions. That means they are only conscious one token at a time, and when each token is sent, they are unconscious. And since the conversational information is not retained in the neural network, but fed back to it for each token it generates, it is basically like every token is a new conscious entity. Dont let the clever chat or voice interface fool you.
