The biggest hurdle in the future is our psychological bias of having to work to earn the right to live, eat and thrive.
The world we live in now would force us into starvation if all of a sudden we no longer needed to work. Imagine you create a colony on mars, the people living in it focus on automating the habitat and earn tokens to buy the food and water the habitat produces based on the amount of work they put into the habitat. When they finish their work and everything is automated, there is no work to be done to earn tokens for food and water, they starve in the presence of plenty. The tokens are preventing technology from doing what it was designed to do - to save labour and make our lives easier.
