Humanity has been in the business of inventing gods for as long as it has existed. Except this time it's for real.
But to be more serious, we are facing many issues which we are either simply not smart enough to solve or require a level of coordination between nations which seems unrealistic to reach. It is the obvious way to solve issues we're not smart or wise enough to solve ourselves by creating something which is. There are a number of threats which could end up wiping us all out and to counter some of them we probably need AI, or to reengineer human nature itself, but eugenics is frowned upon.
Finding justifications is very easy. The question is just whether the risk/reward calculation is worth it. Eliezer would say no. I would say yes.
