This guy? Stuart J. Russell is a British computer scientist and professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he holds the Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering and is a former chair of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department. He earned his B.A. with first-class honours in physics from Oxford University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1986. Russell is best known as the co-author, with Peter Norvig, of the widely used textbook Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach, which has been translated into 14 languages and is employed in over 1,500 universities across 135 countries. He is the founder and director of the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI) at UC Berkeley, established in 2016, and also leads the International Association for Safe and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (IASEAI). His research spans machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, knowledge representation, planning, real-time decision making, computer vision, and the philosophical foundations of AI. He has also contributed to global seismic monitoring systems for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and has worked on computational physiology and intensive-care unit monitoring. Russell has held several prestigious appointments, including adjunct professor of neurological surgery at UC San Francisco from 2008 to 2011, vice-chair of the World Economic Forum’s Council on AI and Robotics, and a US representative to the Global Partnership on AI. He was awarded the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021 and delivered the BBC Reith Lectures that same year. He is a fellow of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, among other honors. He has received numerous awards, including the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation, the IJCAI Computers and Thought Award, the World Technology Award (Policy category), and the Feigenbaum Prize from the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence.
