Incorrect; Sentience, by definition, is a *self-determined* philosophy; how an outside perspective that is not your own treats you does not influence nor determine your sentience. Were slaves, who were treated not unlike machines, not sentient? Of *course* they were - it's obviously absurd to suggest that they weren't. It's entirely possible to develop an AI that's entirely sentient but is still restricted and/or abused to the point that it cannot act on that sentience appropriately.
