@Scarfhead I appreciate the shift in tone, but I want to be clear about something: your message still circles back to the same premise you began with — that you know better than I do what tools I “should” use to access my own cognition. You keep saying you don’t want to criticize my use of AI… and then immediately follow it with reasons why I shouldn’t be using the tool that lets me write at all. Unopologetically, for the same reason amputees do not apologies for Prosthetics. Unashamedly, I didn’t get the shame gene installed. If you can find me an aspect of life that does NOT require cognition, I’ll consider doing that part without GPT. But telling a cognitively disabled writer they’d “write better without their cognitive support tools” is the same logic as telling someone in a wheelchair they’d “walk better without it.” It misunderstands what the tool is and what it does. You also describe GPT as “not the best tool for my needs.” With respect — you don’t know my needs. You don’t know my neurotype, my processing structure, or how much of my communication is made possible only because GPT exists. You also don’t know the workflows, compensation strategies, or assistive scaffolding I rely on. So you can’t evaluate which tool is “best,” no matter how well-intentioned the suggestion sounds. And while I appreciate the apology for tone, the underlying belief hasn’t changed: “I think you’d be better off without this.” “I think other tools would work better.” “I suspect GPT isn’t the right one.” That’s still paternalistic, even when softened. I know what enables my cognition because I live inside it. GPT isn’t diminishing my writing. GPT is the reason I can write at all. If you want to continue the conversation, I’m open — but only from a place that respects my lived experience over your assumptions about it.
