@Scarfhead I hear the sentiment in what you’re saying, and I don’t doubt it comes from a place you believe is supportive. But I want to be clear about something that matters to me: I’m also a qualified writer. I’ve built my craft for years, and I don’t need anyone — even well-intentioned — stepping in as an authority over how I create. I’m the one who knows what my mind does, how it works, and what helps me express myself. You just don’t have access to that. I do. When I use AI, it isn’t because I’m lost. It’s because I understand my own cognitive needs intimately. I know when my working memory stalls, when language drops out mid-thought, when my ideas outpace my hands. AI is the tool that lets me bring the things in my head all the way into the world. That’s not something you can diagnose from reading a couple of comments. And while I appreciate the compliment, my value as a writer isn’t something you get to hand down to me. I don’t need someone to tell me I’d be “better without GPT.” That decision — what strengthens or weakens my voice — lives with me and only me. You can see the surface of my work; I’m the one living the process. The part I need to address directly is this: pity doesn’t help. Saying you’re “heartbroken” for me doesn’t describe my experience — it describes your assumption of it. My disability isn’t tragic, and needing a cognitive mobility aid doesn’t make me fragile. It makes me resourceful. It gives me access. I’m not ashamed of that. If you think I write well, thank you. But my skill comes from me — and I’m not going to abandon the tools that support my mind just to fit someone else’s idea of authenticity. I don’t accept gatekeeping dressed as guidance. I know who I am on the page. And I get to choose the tools that let me show up fully.
