No, AI is not racist. The problem is that the people who trained the AI are unconsciously biased and some consciously so. It has been reported and shown time and time again that without more people of color in the training data, AI does a poor job of recognizing people of color especially black people. So yes, this is about race. And yes it does impact black people at significantly higher rates and other minorities. It does not impact white people in the same way because white people are who the AI recognize. They already know about this issue, but use and trust it anyway.
