the "AI Crawlers" aren't anything new either; "web crawlers" are a concept central to making any search engine work. Companies like Google got big because they spent huge amounts of developer hours solving the problem of writing a high-quality web crawler program that can run on a server somewhere and browse the internet, categorizing the information it finds on each site so that it can be "indexed" for the search engine (associated with tags so that the search engine knows what to give you for your search query). This was normal before, but now companies are building much more aggressive versions of these programs to feed the info to an LLM.
