@Thirsty_Fox I totally understand that perspective. I don't have the knowledge or experience to really comment on which could be better, but my intuition says radar would be more accurate. But I'm judging that based on comparing time-of-flight sensor accuracy vs single source depth interpolation on cameras. Adding several cameras must make the interpolation orders of magnitude more accurate. All of that said, I think there's some validity to school of thought of replicating what evolution "decided" was best (ignoring bats). If humans can use stereo optical data as well as we do, it stands that a computer could do the same, especially given 4x more sensors. Humans, and all animals, are absolutely incredible at accurately determining depth and distance, even under incredibly poor conditions. So I think it's entirely possible to accomplish the same with optical sensors. I do think there's more to the decision than "cost cutting". Tesla has a strong culture of simplifying things and hyper-optimizing the remaining aspects of their design. Elon also has begun developing a cross-company culture of using human-tested/human-like technologies anywhere possible, which I think is informed by his commitment to futurism, and is likely all in harmony towards a far away end goal. Sort of making sure that humans, or biology in general, are the cornerstone of future tech so that we aren't viewed as inferior compared to AI/robotics. Also, our world is built by us based on how we observe and interact with it, so it makes sense to focus on tech that replicates that for better integration.
