Some inequality, economically speaking, doesn't cause too much trouble.
However, the gap between the richest and the poorest keeps growing. With automation and AI, most jobs will eventually no longer require people. If the current economic systems are kept in place, this will mean poverty for the majority of the population. And if the average person is poor, who will be able to afford the products corporations are offering?
A UBI would prevent this. People will retain some purchasing power, keeping the economy going.
Of course, you could also redesign the entire economy from scratch, but I feel that is a lot of effort and won't sit well with many.
