In fancy terms, "model collapse" or "model autophagy disorder" (backronym of MAD).
It's primarily a problem (well, "problem") for creative models, where they need diverse data* to both generalize better and avoid pitfalls from biased data. STEM, reasoning and coding models have honestly just gotten better with the advent of synthetic data.
*To see why, ask something like GPT-OSS, which I believe to have been trained on exclusively synthetic data, to tell you a story. You will quickly see why I say this.
