Ugh, even worse that I have yet to see others consider: imagine how dangerous these autonomous vehicles will be not just because of their coding and errors they are prone to even with vigorous testing, but because of how lazy people are with *basic maintenance* ... I mean, just look around us. People won’t even do basic care on the vehicles they have now. Learn to change the oil myself to save me a lot of money? Change a _tire_ when it’s flat? Buy new tires when the tread is wore down when wires are sticking out? Check brake and blinker lights to ensure a bulb isn’t blown? Ensure windshield wipers are good and adequately wipe away water? Keep a check on engine temp? Wow, my gas pedal is stuck … I don’t possibly know why, it surely can’t be the floor mat that everyone said to not use due to its design being wedged under the pedal, right?! Brakes are wore down and making a grinding sound? Ah, it’s fine, just ignore it. What am I, a *_mechanic_* ?!? Ew. I don’t get paid to do the basics of the most basic things every car owner should know to do! Screw that, I’m going to be a danger to everyone else on the roads. It’s not going to magically get better when autonomous vehicles become more widely pushed. It’ll be worse. There will have to be government mandates made where people are forced to take their self-driving vehicles every X miles on the odometer for basic maintenance… because right now, folks don’t even want to do that right now when given a choice on the vehicles they’re driving as it is. Hell, they don’t even want to learn to do it themselves, either. It becomes everyone else’s problems on the roadways, instead … which is exactly what will happen here. I’d like to know that people would take care of what they own, but most anymore don’t even want to do the basics. These will be even bigger 2 ton hazards on the roadways because of it. They are not going to magically make people safer unless the government steps in and encroaches on such … and I don’t want that to happen.
