There is a certain humour in the outcry, in an industry that is known to make pretty much zero money for the vast majority of the population anyway. "Creatives" of any type, managing to make a full time salary out of anything creative and artistic globally would probably not even reach double digit percentiles, in a global population. Those that actually become famous or very well off? We're talking hudreds and thousandths of a percentile point.
AI isn't stealing you jobs in the creative industry in a vacuum. Why? Because there are literally no jobs to steal, at least not if you're actually a very respected and unique artist. If you're just drawing the same derivatives, generic styled comic/anime shite, it's no wonder you're being "replaced".
A 2018 survey reported that the average total income for artists was £16,150 per annum, significantly below the national average salary of £27,600 at that time. Notably, income from art practice constituted only 36% of this total, averaging £6,020. Furthermore, approximately 66% of visual artists earned less than £5,000 annually from their art practice, and only 7% earned more than £20,000 from their practice.
Another study from 2018, a survey of 1,016 visual artists revealed that 60% earned less than $30,000 annually, with the median income falling between $20,000 and $30,000. Additionally, nearly half of the respondents reported that less than 10% of their income was derived from their art practice.
In the UK, the average income for artists is 47% lower than the median income of full-time minimum wage workers, who earn approximately £23,795 annually.
Female artists in the UK earn approximately 40% less than their male counterparts, with average total incomes of £14,800 for women compared to £19,800 for men.
Due to low earnings from art, many artists seek additional employment. In the UK, 68% of visual artists have supplementary jobs, with 51% of these in non-creative fields. In the US, many artists rely on secondary employment to sustain their livelihoods.
Achieving significant financial success in the arts is exceedingly rare. For instance, the likelihood of a living artist in the US securing a solo exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 2015 was approximately 0.0006%.
TL;DR: AI isn’t killing art; it’s killing the elitist notion that being an artist makes you better than everyone else. Create because you love it, not because it makes you feel special and a unique talented cookie. You were likely never ever going to even make a subsistence living from art, so stop pretending that most of you are special enough to do so. You're not. Sorry. And the vast majority of people generating AI art, are doing so for fun - you were never going to get a piece of the pie, because that entire demographic didn't even exist until AI made it possible to create art with limited background.
