@10acious32 The AI women with fantastic headdresses and low cut blouses are awful. As are the countless oversaturated sunset photos on Instagram. As are the countless cat photos on Flickr. As are all the felt paintings of Elvis and sad clowns. As are all the mannered (mannerism: emphasis on self-conscious artifice) anime rip-offs. As are all the kitsch images in all the other media formats. Las Vegas is bad art (per art critic Robert Hughes) in the medium of city culture and architecture. It’s the artist who makes them bad, not the tool. You have to understand that many AI users come from a tech background. For them this is a fun toy. They haven’t spent years in life drawing classes, painting classes, printmaking classes, art anatomy classes, taken years of art history classes or read dozens of art history books or shot film and digital pictures using a variety of technologies that have developed since the mid 1800’s like you or me. These image makers have no art background. Expect them to make the same mistakes, make the same garbage art that every artist does using every medium. AI software is months old. Give artists time to figure out how to best incorporate it into their workflow. There are artists now who are doing just that. They are looking at how AI fits into the long history of artists who use imagery to communicate, who have learned to manage sticks of charcoal, pigments and paint, film and digital pictures and turn them into meaningful images. AI is the only medium that has allowed me to take everything I learned from years of drawing and life drawing classes, painting classes, photography, Photoshop skills, and most especially my knowledge of art history and put them to use. My teachers still talk to me with every AI image I make. They ask me: do the shapes and colors move the eye? Are you using overlapping, atmospheric perspective to create depth? Have you resolved ambiguous areas? How are using negative space? How does scale impact your image? Are you flattening space when you want to deepen it? Most of all: what are you trying to communicate. So instead of casting hate and ignorance on the tool why don’t you use your art background, skills and experience and make the tool work for you. Demonstrate to the beginners how it should be done.
