I lived in China for the first 10 years of my life, then went to middle school through college in Los Angeles, California. I still travel to China every year to visit family. It’s true that cameras are everywhere in China, though I don’t know exactly what they are tracking, I assume it’s mostly for public surveillance. In big cities, the population density can be five to seven times higher than in the US, and public safety is a major concern. There has to be a pragmatic way for people to feel safe, which is why many people in China are willing to trade some public privacy for social stability. Also, China’s population has very different moral values and cultural expectations than America’s, so what Americans might see as wrong is simply accepted reality in China. I consider myself half American, so I understand both sides. i also heard that people are afraid US would adopt this mass surveillance system, I believe a mass-surveillance system would never work in the U.S. because of legislation, and the lack of “need” due to lower population density. On the other hand, the American system would never work in China there would be stabbings, crime, every day due to the crowding, and the police would be overwhelmed, which would dramatically reduce public stability. From my time in China(usually during summer breaks) I can say from personal experience that China feels much safer than the US In LA., it’s common to hear about muggings or car break-ins, but in China that’s almost unthinkable because of the system. So I would say that regardless of how people feel about its methods, the system does work. As for the “social credit system,” that’s mostly propaganda. It was never actually implemented in the way people talk about it's more like our (FICO creadit score), and no one in China has ever heard of it or talks about it.
