Progression of AI image generation is not possible without digital artists, because ai images are a result of feeding hundreds of human-made images to the AI model. AI is quite literally cannot produce anything original, it only spews out what it was trained on. For example you can ask AI to make an image of any niche character, it will fail. Because as long as AI isnt trained on images of this character, it cant produce its own itself.
So your idea of artists "losing to technology" is quite literally wrong. AI at its core is uncapable of being original, therefore it's usage in any setting that requires an artistic view will be unprofitable and discouraged by the masses, because lets face it, art is not only the final result, its also the hard work artist had to put in to get that result. And that will never change whether you like it or not, sculpting is inherently harder than drawing, and drawing is inherently harder than photography, and it goes on and on. One thing is certain AI "art" takes its place at the end od this list.
