We're aware of that, the point is: could those original images have been generated without all the individual pieces in the dataset? The problem is not with whether or not the generated images are original, or whether random people should be entitled to complete ownership of those images generated by algorithms trained on their work. The issue is that these algorithms are being used to make money, and none of that money is being used to compensate the people, without whom those algorithms wouldn't work the way they really do. Artists aren't being treated with fairness, they're not being asked by these companies if their work can be used, and they're not being given an opportunity to negotiate a price on the company's usage of their work to train their algorithm. Instead, their work is being used, often times without the artist even knowing it, and *never* with the artist being paid, based on the value that is being generated by an algorithm trained on things they made. To me and most people who oppose the way these algorithms are being used, this is just another step in the road to creating and cementing the precedent that people should not have a claim to the value that is extracted from their own work. And we may be soon at the end of that road, where a slim majority concentrates wealth created off the backs of common people like me and you, in a way much too similar to how monarchies and aristocracies help much of the power in much of the world not that long ago. Your forefathers gave all they had to fight for the liberal principles of equality and individual liberty and a free market in which we all should be able to participate as equals and free individuals, and we're just letting a few oligarchs take that away?
