Frank Herbert wrote Dune in the early 1960's. He said publicly that the "Spice" was an allegory for the oil industry. But the environmentalism wasn't the core message. From the first novel there was mention of a "jihad" or holy war that humanity fought and won against AI. They believed it had been wiped out completely and there were strict prohibitions against further development of AI.
But that AI, being self-replicating, simply shot copies of itself out into the universe to protect its survival. It returns at the end of the series of Dune novels to enslave humanity again. Therein lies the difference between Dune/The Matrix and Terminator: enslavement or eradication. Neither option seems like a bright future.
