+Alan W What do you think those automated container loader trucks they use to load and unload container ships at big harbors are doing since 20 years? Or those fully automatic fork lifts and trolleys they have in advanced factories? Those things react to traffic and human workers too. Regular automated passenger cars are able to navigate inner city traffic too, so why not a automated truck? It might even be easier, because you probably can put more sensory equipment on a truck than you can on a normal passenger car, because the truck doesn't have to look good and you don't need windows for passengers to look out of. If your navigation system can tell you where to go and when to switch lanes and all that and you are just the muscle following those instructions, what makes you think you couldn't be replaced by a slightly more advanced navigation system with mechanical muscles steering the truck? I'm sorry, but your job is not safe from automation. If you are making long term plans with paying off a mortgage on a house or something like that, you better include changing careers in those plans. No job is secure. There are even computer programs composing music and writing news articles now. But any job that has to do with driving is going first. Driving a car, bus or truck is at its core nothing else but to operate in a regulated system, with common rules and normed regulations. Of course that is relatively easy to automatize. The programming language of a computer is basically the same thing as traffic rules. You have this set of rules that tells the machine how to react and what to do to get from point A to point B. What you do when you sit behind the steering wheel of a truck and follow the traffic rules is not too different from what a computer does when it has to perform certain calculations.
