Cody Martin Evolution is just genetic mutations that occur in offspring. Through these mutations humans (along with most living things) have been programmed to feel pain. Obviously the organisms that didn't evolve the ability to feel pain were killed off because they had no idea they were in any danger of being killed. The ones that did evolve the ability to feel pain lived on long enough to reproduce and their offspring received the ability to feel pain as well. Our DNA is our "programming" that the process of evolution "programmed". An AI that can react to stimuli and self-improve would very much be able to evolve into a conscious thing. After all, it's all just chemical reactions. Organics and machines are only able to ever do anything or think because of chemical reactions.
