One possible need for a sentient AI could arise if you look at user customisation. An assistance program like siri etc. would work incredibly more efficient. Another purpose could be psychiatric therapy, basically as empathetic interlocuter. Furthermore this becomes problematic because once we'd introduce these AIs, those who use them most certainly would not want to give them away that quickly. Afterall humans would also build emotional connections to those machines as soon as the uncanny value is bridged and they could become genuine friends.
