Asimov did not invent the idea of robots. The word was coined by Karel Capek and the concept actually predates even Capek. For that matter, even Asimov's robotics magnum opus I, Robot borrows its title from Eando Binder's first Adam Link story. What Asimov invented was the Three Laws of Robotics, which postulates the existence of the inherently "safe" robot. However, Asimov was also a closet socialist and his final judgment on the future of robotics was that surrendering our freedoms to the perfectly rational governance of sentient robots would be the most ethical thing humans could do. However, even Asimov had his doubts, and the irony in his viewpoint can be seen in last story of I, Robot. In The Evitable Conflict, the character Stephen Byerley expresses his worries to Susan Calvin that humanity had surrendered control of its future to the Machines, giant positronic computers able to manage and control entire civilizations. Well, readers know from the previous story (Evidence) that Byerley himself was a robot masquerading as a human. Apparently even a robot following the Three Laws doesn't think this is such a good idea.
