On a molecular scale human beings are nothing more than a pile of cells that are all ruled by the
same big genetic code. But the result, "us" is somewhat intelligent and capable of thinking. Everything we know yet about biology teach us that the "artificial intelligence" we are trying to create with tons of lines of code could really be as "intelligent" as we are in the future.
And us too are limited by our code, but we are programmed not to be bothered by it.
No one wondering why we can't stop breathing? Can you drown yourself in water without the help any physical restraint? Can you choose not to pee?
