We don't even now how self awareness works biologically and how or why it evolved. So it would be impossible to reproduce a thing we don't even understand.

Self awareness is not direct correlated with complexity, computers are already under many aspects much more capable and complex than human brains but they have not develop nothing similar to self awareness.

Probably the only way to crate a true self-aware AI is to create a computer with real neurological tissue. And we don't even know if that is possible.
