Dogs and other animals do not necessarily live "just fine". Yes, if they are lucky enough to have kind owners, or not be caught for laboratory tests, or caged up, they might live happy lives. But otherwise, we subject other living things, often intelligent, to hellish conditions, just because.
In any case, we don't know enough about consciousness to say it's impossible for a robot to have one at some point should technology prove feasible. People far, far, smarter than you or I are doing deep studies on the nature of consciousness, artificial intelligence, and robotics.... and they are not dismissing this as casually as you are.
