The problem with that line of reasoning is that the vast majority of scientific discoveries are made for the purpose of satisfying curiosity. Scientists usually have only a vague idea of how their research might impact humanity. As long as the people doing the research believe there's value in gaining knowledge for knowledge's sake, it can be considered a proper answer.
Also, I don't see why we shouldn't be content with cars parking themselves for us. A lot of people can't drive a stick now that automatic transmission has become the standard, but it's not like that's a bad thing; it's just another sign of progress. .
