In the 1990s I headed up the IT dept of a major Australian bank. We had 300 software developers on permanent staff and their code accuracy was 97%. I left in 2000 and within 2 years they had outsourced programming to India. The accuracy rate fell to 73%...essentially unusable. But what did they expect for $7ph? Then they outsourced the whole of IT to first EDS, and then AWS. The accuracy rate is still anout 85% and they have to redo most code by hand. They tried AI and the rate fell to 65%. Now they have a dilemma. Good SAP programmers can fetch $150ph because of the huge shortage. Their IT costs have ballooned. Lesson learned.
