As a computer scientist myself, it's easy to get swept up in the excitement over what is possible and figuring out how it works internally, but the more time I spend learning about the matter from the perspective of artists, I also appreciate their point of view. My feelings on AI are not particularly strong, but I do want to respect the people who are actually involved. In my opinion, AI image generators have their place in the world, and the big problem is that it is used wrong. They should be used in private, to help yourself visualize ideas you have, but not to be shared publically. As someone who loves to run DnD games, but neither has the talent nor the time to draw every reference art myself, I would really like the opportunity to have a quick way to create disposable character portraits that I can use to show off unique NPCs without having to rely on swiping existing art off the internet. For purposes like that, I believe AI is a very useful tool. But I totally get the arguments about the automatization of society. Since I was a kid, I imagined my ideal world to be one where more or less independent machines take care of all the basic needs, all the menial labor like food production, clothing, energy, etc. Basically all the work that pays shit anyway and no one really wants to do. Since all the basic resources are available, society could then focus on passion projects and creative things. But sadly it looks like exactly the jobs I always thought would be left for humans are the first to be automated... PS: I am still kinda waiting for the point where AI becomes advanced enough where we can create videogames that are entirely AI generated on the fly, allowing them to react to where the player goes and what they do in real time. Or a program that listens in during dnd sessions and generates fitting background music and video scenes according to what is spoken xD Just for fun
