This happens a lot in any creative field and it's gotten so much worse since generative AI went mainstream. But I remember when I transitioned from one career to UX, and all the advice was "do free work," "volunteer," and "internships to get in the door." And it's all exploitative. And now, thanks to generative AI, all those "opportunities" are going to dry up. So it just becomes a vicious cycle.
