This video tried to dismiss UBI as not beneficial and failed through a US/Chilean study but I think that conflicts with other studies; not working or earning an income equivalent to what you would be without UBI doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing, as this doesn’t measure mental health or life satisfaction. If we are able to create a utopia where everyone can sustainably continue living without us working due to AI and automation or other things doing the work that was once necessary for us, then we should be open to positive change that way. Of course, this would alarm the ruling elite because late stage capitalism wants to own us by having us by the collar (it’s no surprise this is coming from OpenResearch) Apparently the video said it only improved those for a year? The research is literally done by the OpenAI author; OpenResearch. Also, realistically, $1000/m in the US where median income is $4000-5000 and these were the *poorest*, it’s obvious that you’re not giving them *enough* for it to matter. Rent alone in chicago is $2300 for one person, and $4500 for three. The linked study actually does mention some benefits too. Of course it found no effect on health and wellbeing because we need a lot more to afford that. Have you seen what health insurance can cost you in the US? The study does however show that UBI on it’s own may not be enough: financial literacy on using credit effectively (or not at all) would be essential for people too. You can't expect people who've never had money to use it effectively immediately. Maybe we can start by lowering the artificially inflated price of housing too.
