Dr Penrose is a very measured, grounded and highly experienced & accomplished scientist. The most sophisticated AI system is as conscious as a brick, no ontological difference. Certain trendy people, whether trained in a relevant knowledge field or not, have very little understanding/realisation of the epistemological and ontological underpinnings of AI and Cognitive Science, and resort to poorly considered claims outside any scientific field regarding consciousness and AI for personal or other gain. We are not capable of producing life beyond blackbox-biological procreation. Instead of focusing on hypocritical, sensationalist and egotistical endeavours such as strong AI, while we have *no clue whatsoever* what constitutes a conscious being, we had better retract our self-catastrophic treatment (aka abortions) of the life we do procreate.
