Around two years ago, I used AI generated images for book covers because I can't afford commissions and I was not planning to publish the books for actual money. I didn't realize the harmful effects of generative AI, and I just wanted the cover to be eye grabbing. I would have liked to do it myself, but I suck at drawing. After an hour of switching between free trials, I finally found some shit that looked decent. Not what I wanted mind you, but abstract enough that it didn't look terrible from afar and fit the vibe well enough. Well, I feel like something like that is the best possible use case for AI images. Abstract, free, and eye catching from afar. However, in each of these categories, you'd be surprised how well you can do with little to no art skills. For my most recent book, I literally just used ms paint to draw a fairly simple blue candle flame (that I couldn't get AI to generate) that was stylized as best as I could. It turned out surprisingly well, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. Plus, there's no worry about image rights or ugly artifacts on closer inspection. Give yourself a chance. Art doesn't need to be high quality or complex to be evocative. Even if it is terrible, at least it's yours.
